Comprehensive Eye Exams For Senior Eyes

The human body undergoes a variety of changes as it gets older. It’s a universal rule to which the eyes are no exception. Older eyes have different needs and experience different risks than younger eyes, which is why we offer specialized eye exams tailored to seniors.

People age 60 and older need to be vigilant about protecting their vision later in life. Many of the most serious eye diseases present no symptoms until vision has already been compromised. That is why it is essential for anyone age 60 and older to undergo comprehensive eye examinations each year.

What to Expect From Your Senior Eye Exam

An eye exam allows us to track your overall eye health, ensure you’re wearing the right corrective prescription, and answer your eye care questions!

The experience begins with the basic examination. We will test your acuity, eye teaming, and focus power, as well as both your near and distance vision. At this point, we will use our refractor to help us ascertain what level of corrective power you should be wearing to ensure it matches the power you’re currently wearing.

We want you to be an active part of your own eye health which is why we take the time to answer your questions and ensure you understand all the information we’ve given you over the course of the exam.

Testing for Eye Diseases

Eye diseases become increasingly common with age. We use our wide range of advanced diagnostic technology to examine the internal structure of your eyes, looking for any irregularities or indications of disease.

Most eye diseases do not show any symptoms until the patient has already suffered permanent vision loss. The best and often only way to detect these diseases early is through regular eye exams.

Glaucoma is a disease resulting in damage to the optic nerve, usually due to increasing eye pressure. With early diagnosis, glaucoma can be treated, and vision loss can be delayed or prevented.

The macula is a small area of the retina responsible for seeing fine details such as facial features and letters in a book (or on a website!) Age-related macular degeneration (or AMD) causes the macula to become obstructed by deposits called drusen or scar tissue. As a result, patients can experience significant vision loss. The majority of vision loss caused by AMD can be prevented or delayed with early diagnosis.

The eye’s crystalline lens is made of water and proteins. As you age, these proteins restructure, causing the lens to become more and more opaque. Cataract development results in hazy or cloudy vision, which can be remedied up to a point with low vision aids. Eventually, a cataract must be eliminated through a relatively simple surgery.
