Emergency Symptoms

You should seek immediate medical care if you experience:

  • Sudden loss of vision
  • Sudden visual disturbances
  • Bleeding from the eye
  • Sudden change in size, shape, or frequency of floaters
  • Waves of flashes
  • Itching, burning, or irritation
  • Chemical contact with the eye
  • Foreign object in the eye

Trust Your Instincts

If your symptoms do not match this list, or you are unsure if your condition constitutes an emergency, you should seek emergency care anyway. You are the best authority on what is normal or healthy for your body.

Common Emergency Eye Issues

Although we have seen a wide variety of emergency eye situations, there are some that are very common. Here are some of the most common eye problems we encounter, and some steps you can take before coming into our office.

Your eye is often vulnerable to stray objects around you. These object can vary from microscopic dust specs to stray metal shavings. If the object has sharp corners or ridges, do not attempt to remove it yourself. Avoid rubbing the eye and seek immediate medical attention.

If, however, the object is unlikely to cause scratches or tears (like an eyelash or mascara particle) you may be able to remove it yourself. Try flushing the eye out with clean, cool water. If this doesn’t move the object, you can try gently tapping it with a clean, moist cotton swab. If the object does not stick to the swab, seek medical attention. Do not rub your eye as this could cause corneal abrasions.

Your eyes are made of extremely delicate membranes and tissues which can be irreparably damaged by chemicals. Even commonplace chemicals like household cleaners and solvents could spell disaster for your eyes.

If your eyes come into contact with any sort of chemical, you need to flush them out with cool, clean water immediately. Any pain or discomfort you feel may dissipate after a few moments, but regardless, you need to keep rinsing your eyes for at least 15 minutes. Once you’ve completed 15 minutes of flushing, seek medical attention.
