Diabetic Eye Exam

Diabetic Eyes Require Extra Thorough Exams

Diabetes affects multiple facets of a patient’s’ health, and eye health is no exception. People with diabetes should have their eyes examined at least once every year.

Take a proactive approach to your eye health and schedule an appointment today.

How Are Diabetic Eye Exams Different From Standard Eye Exams?

Simply put, diabetic eye exams are more thorough than a standard eye exam. In addition to testing eye function, acuity, teaming, and focus power, we will thoroughly examine the interior structure of the eye for any potential indicators of damage or disease.

By having their eyes examined regularly, patients with diabetes can accurately track their eye health, and catch any diabetes-related eye diseases before they cause any significant, irreversible vision loss.

Providing Comprehensive Eye Care Through Advanced Technology

Trendy Eyes Optometry is proud to be at the forefront of eye care technology. We use our cutting-edge diagnostic tools to examine patients with diabetes and inspect the internal structure of their eyes. Through the use of fundus photography and laser macular screening, we can detect diabetic eye disease earlier and more effectively.

Diabetic Eye Disease

The term “diabetic eye disease” refers to any disease that can be brought on or influenced by diabetes. Not all conditions associated with diabetic eye disease are exclusive to patients with diabetes. Diabetic eye disease can include:

  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Diabetic retinopathy (exclusive to patients with diabetes)
  • Diabetic macular edema (exclusive to patients with diabetes)

When blood glucose levels aren’t properly regulated, they can damage retinal blood vessels. If the damage continues to worsen, blood vessels begin to leak, spilling blood into the eye. This leakage causes vision problems, and can eventually cause scar tissue which leads to retinal cell death.

Diabetic retinopathy can be treated if it is caught early through eye exams.

The macula is a small portion of the retina which is responsible for central vision. Central vision allows us to see finer details like letters, numbers, and facial features.

If diabetic retinopathy is left untreated, it can progress, leaking blood into the retina. This leakage causes the retina to swell, obscuring the macula as it does. This is called macular edema. Over time, macular cells begin to die, causing permanent vision loss.
