Does Wearing Prescription Eyeglasses Weaken Your Eyes?

Wearing prescription glasses (or contact lenses) doesn’t weaken your eyes or your vision. In fact, glasses improve your vision by correcting refractive errors in your eyes.

Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are caused by changes in the shape of your eye, not the strength of your eye muscles.

Another fact: Not wearing glasses when you need them can lead to eye strain. By wearing glasses, you can help your eyes to focus more easily and reduce the amount of strain they experience.

Another common misconception is that glasses will make your eyes "lazy" and dependent on the glasses for clear vision. This isn’t true. In order to see, your eyes need to focus the light that enters them, regardless of whether or not you’re wearing glasses.

It’s important to note that some conditions can actually worsen or become permanent if you don’t wear the proper eyewear. Conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (eye turn) are sometimes treated using prescription eyewear, which should be worn according to your eye doctor’s instructions.
